Hope you all had a Merry Christmas & your New Year is heading off with a bang! I don’t know about you but I am excited for this new year! I’m working on improving in many different areas of life. As a Christian, wife, mother, homemaker, friend, blogger. So many things I am looking to accomplish this year! So how can we actually attain our goals that we set? Let’s talk about how to achieve our goals!

So first I’ll tell you some of my goals for this year and then we can talk about how we can accomplish our goals together!
My Goals for 2020
Bible Reading: This year I am starting out with reading the New Testament in January, 9 chapters per day. It is extremely hard to do this with littles! I am using Alexander Scourby App on my phone to help and trying to get up long before the kids to get it done. I’m not always successful at this being 3 months postpartum and nursing about 3 times per night. Ha! But I will keep trying until I succeed! Even though I was hoping to stay with 9 chapters a day even after I finish the New Testament this month, I’m just not sure that’s a sustainable goal in this season of life for me. However, I will continue reading to the kids daily using the One Year Bible and reading through on my own at least once this year for my personal reading.
Bible Memory: Bible memory is starting up again at church so I’m jumping back in with this! It is fun to memorize scripture with my son. I love the way he pronounces things and his learning of new words. It is so adorable!
Soul Winning: I usually do not set a goal for this. I just go and whatever happens-happens. This year I thought it would be fun to set a goal of 30 salvations. If I am able to get out consistently, it should be an attainable goal, even with littles.
Lose Weight: I need to lose 31.5 pounds to get back to pre-pregnancy weight. Since I’m over 40 now I decided to join Weight Watchers to help me. I like it so far because you can eat whatever you like. No special foods or no/low carb (I would die Lol!). I started on January 1st and so far have lost 5.5 lbs. It may not seem like much but I’m happy with the progress so far. I can’t lose too fast being that I am breastfeeding and need to keep a good supply and I’m still indulging in chocolate, half & half in my coffee and Starbucks when needed. Haha! Increase Energy/Get in Shape: Being over 40 with 2 littles is no joke! I have never enjoyed working out. Never.In.My.Whole.Life. Ha! But I need to stay strong and healthy for them, and for my husband and so I can serve the Lord -all for the long haul. So I decided now is the time to get moving! A friend of mine started her YouTube Channel called New Day Dawning just in time for me! She does great 10 minute pilates workout videos. I love them because they are quick, she is high energy, encouraging, and modestly dressed. Often my kids are already awake when I workout and I am completely comfortable doing these workouts in front of my kiddos. And my oldest at almost 4 years old does them with me most of the time. We call the moves funny names and do them together. Every day he says, “Mommy, let’s exercise!” in his cute little voice. He is definitely helping me stay on course! And, for once in my life, I am actually enjoying working out and I am loving how it has increased my energy and my mindset is so much more positive. I highly recommend this if you are not exercising! You will love what it does for you!
Resurrecting Date Night: I let this slip being super pregnant and exhausted and then postpartum and adjusting with new baby. My husband deserves my attention and my best.
I’ve got to get these kiddos in bed early so I can hang out with my man! We need a little time alone everyday just to talk. And we need more time to hang out and do something special to nurture our relationship. So we need to bring back date night! Our next big date is Valentine’s Day. Originally my husband planned for me to get a massage at a local resort for Valentine’s Day. He just melts my heart he’s so sweet!! I talked him out of it though because our baby is just too little for me to be away from him yet. I’m super excited my husband purchased a massage table for us instead. We still have a hot dinner date together and we will be giving each other a massage. I cannot wait!!
There are so many things I need to improve in this area. Setting aside time to play, praying for them more, teaching them more, patience. As you all know it is not easy being a parent. Sometimes just keeping them alive is all we can do in a day! Let’s just be real! Ha!
Our Grocery Budget
Grocery Budget: Last year I started the Grocery Budget Bootcamp to help me learn how to save money on groceries and I still haven’t finished it. Even though I haven’t finished the entire course, we have been constistently saving around $400 every month on groceries since last May by putting into practice the things I have learned in the course. I only have a few chapters to go before its complete. There is another enrollment coming up March 11th-17th so I’ll go through it with the group that enrolls then to fine tune what I have learned and finish the course. I’m hoping to learn some additional things to help me stay on point with my grocery budget goal and maybe even reduce it a bit more. You can read about my journey thus far here. Clean House: Last year I read the book Sink Reflections. I have to say the author Marla is a bit quirky and I don’t follow everything to a T but she is on point on how to get your house clean! She guides you through step by step on how to get your act together, no matter if you are starting from a place of overwhelmed hopelessness being a hoarder or you are reasonably clean and just need to get some tips for improvement. Marla also helps you establish a morning & evening routine, cleaning routine, getting organized, self care, and how to get it all done.
She starts you off by having you shine your sink. It may sound silly but it really does make a big difference in your mindset! My dishes are done every night immediately after dinner unless things get super crazy on a church night or something. But I usually don’t put the clean dishes away until the next morning and there’s always water spots all over my stainless steel sink. When I take the extra time to put them away at night and shine my sink, it feels so much better! It is so nice waking up to a spotless kitchen. So I am going to gear up this year and get my “zones” figured out and start shining my sink everyday!
Now Let’s Talk About How to Achieve Your Goals
Some of my goals may sound pretty lofty to you, and to me sometimes too! But if we break down our goals into some simple steps and make a road map for ourselves, we can surely get to our destination! Now keep in mind some resolutions/goals may not happen over night. And you may even be thinking right now that you already failed and have just given up.
But you haven’t! We are creatures of habit and we just need to keep working these changes/goals into our lives until they become habit. So if you’ve fallen off the wagon already this year on a resolution you made, I want you to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and make a new map for yourself. There is still plenty of time this year for you to make the changes you want in your life!
Set Your Goals
First things first. You need to decide what you want to change. Do you want to stop doing something? Start doing something? Get better at something? What do you want to accomplish? Write it down!
Set SMART Goals
Dawn in one of her videos, How to Conquer Your 2020 Health & Fitness Goals, talks about making your goals SMART. The acronym is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. These are all great ways to help you break it down into action steps so you can actually achieve your goals!
Figure out your “Why”
Why are you wanting to make this change? Will it make your life easier in the long run? Be pleasing to God? Make you healthier? Happier? Is it for your spouse, your kids, your church family? What is the benefit of you attaining this goal? Write this down!
Make a Game Plan/Map
So if you are looking to lose weight, for example, how are you going to do it? Are you going to try a special diet? Cut and count calories? Exercise? When are you going to do it? First thing in the morning? After work? What timeframe are you looking to get this done by? In the next 3 months? By summertime?
Visualize Your Success
Imagine you have already made your goal a reality. What does that look like for you? Your family? Think about how fantastic you will feel once you have met your goal!
My New Year’s Resolution in 2006 was to start going to church consistently and get my life together in a way that would be pleasing to God. I was a total wreck back then. I was saved but not at all living a Christian life. Thankfully, I found Faithful Word Baptist Church! Pastor Anderson used to say 3 to Thrive and I really took that to heart and I am so glad I did! By being consistent to church I was able to grow in the Lord, little by little. My friend Mrs. McMurtry from Gently Led Sisters talks about Achieving a Life of Consistency and it was so good!
Set Yourself Up for Success
Make it easy for yourself to accomplish what you want to do. I really like this video put out by my friend Karen with Our House on How to Achieve Homeschool Success in 2020. I am not officially homeschooling yet, of course, but her video tells you exactly what you can do achieve your goals in any area of your life just by following the path of least resistance. It’s true, we all have our weaknesses and so to keep us on track for our goals, make getting there easier by setting yourself up for success. An example of this might be that your goal is to be on time to your appointments. Setting out clothes for the next day the night before, getting materials/supplies altogether that you need to take with you and put them in the car. Keeping your keys, phone, wallet, etc all in or near your purse so you don’t forget anything when you’re walking out the door and waste time running back inside to find xyz item.
Don’t Be Afraid to Adjust Your Goals
Just like with my bible reading goal, it was to originally read 9 chapters daily for the month of January to get through the New Testament and possibly keep that going for the year. Once I got in there and started doing it though, its proving that might be a little much in my current season of life. So after I finish the New Testament by the end of January, I’m going to just read through cover to cover 2x this year (once in my personal reading and once to the kids). Still a great goal, just readjusted to make it sustainable/achievable for me.
